Specialist Upper GI and General Surgeon

What does an Upper GI surgeon do?
Hello, I’m Mr Mohamed Aly, and I’m a consultant surgeon specialising in general and upper GI surgery in Northwest London. As an upper GI surgeon, I focus on operations and treatments for the upper digestive system, such as the stomach and oesophagus. I readily offer surgery for hiatus hernia and acid reflux. As a general surgeon, I also treat diseases of the gallstones, liver, small bowel and colon. I also specialise in emergency surgical problems such as appendicitis, gallstone pains or infected gallbladder and bowel obstruction on a daily basis.
My approach to surgical care
My priority is to provide you with the highest quality surgical care in a comfortable and supportive environment, while minimizing discomfort and stress. I understand that coming to see a surgeon can be daunting, so I strive to listen carefully to your concerns, explain everything clearly.
I explain complex medical information in a clear and understandable way, so you can make informed decisions about your care.
I also work hard with my team to arrange any investigations you need quickly and at locations near you. My team can offer you a clinic date to have same-day diagnostics.
I am committed to providing you with the best possible surgical care. I look forward to the opportunity to help you on your journey to better health.
Where I work
I work at The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Northwest London, where I lead the development of the Upper GI Surgery. Since 2024, we have offered hiatus hernia surgery and surgical treatment for acid reflux in the NHS. I am proud of this role as it has lowered waiting times for surgery for patients.
I work with Circle Healthcare and London International Patient Services and offer accessible surgical treatment in West and Central London. You can book an appointment with my team here. I work with all major healthcare providers and I also look after self-paying patients.
My Expertise
My training has been extensive to become a specialist upper GI surgeon. I am a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in general surgery and upper GI surgery. I trained in prestigious and high volume bariatric and upper GI centres such Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Luton and Dunstable Hospital and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. My training also enabled me to work with senior experts in Upper GI cancer at Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College. My work has focused on mastering minimally invasive surgery for the safest and best recovery of my patients. I trained in countless complex cases of hiatus hernia surgery, complex bariatric surgery patients and upper GI complications. I also trained in offering emergency gallbladder surgery and emergency groin hernia surgery, which what I also offer my patients in Northwest London.

I am particularly interested in using the latest surgical techniques to improve outcomes for my patients. This often means less invasive surgery, which can lead to quicker recovery and less discomfort. I aim to perform 95% of my operations with a minimally invasive technique. This often means my patients have the best recovery whether they had gallbladder surgery, hernia surgery or hiatus hernia surgery. I offer upper GI endoscopy with or without sedation.
Personal Interests
Beyond work, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking and photography. I also enjoy producing a surgical podcast with my friends.
